The Lofts are a historically preservation effort as well as a new and green building venture. Built on the site of the former Starland Dairy, the Lofts retain details from an earlier era and has earned recognition from preservation groups.

The concrete walls contain 2 inches of Styrofoam insulation, meaning "heat and cold never make it to the inside," says the building's designer. The bamboo-filled courtyard offers a quiet spot and reduces water consumption.

Those and other features have helped Starland Lofts meet the requirements for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification.
